I always had the entrepreneurial itch. My college buddies and I decided to start a tequila company. We plunged right in…no business plan, no depth of knowledge, no detailed research.
What did we have?
We had a great deal of enthusiasm. We had ambition.
And we were hungry.
So we left the safety of corporate America to go on this journey. The journey started fueling my entrepreneurial fire.
I knew I was on the path to somewhere.
But my path turned out to be different than I had planned.
Enter the Big Tequila companies.
We took the risk and put into place a major marketing campaign to advertise on MTV and ESPN. This advertising push was going to make or break our tequila business.
The Big Tequila companies swooped in and paid more advertising dollars in order to bump our ads and take over our TV and radio advertising spots.
All of our ads were pushed to 3:00-4:00 in the morning because the big boys bought out our spots and pushed our ads out of the way.
In the end, we just didn’t have the muscle, where-with-all, or financial backing to push back.
While this didn’t end well, it turned out to be the best lesson I have ever learned.

I now seriously started looking into buying existing profitable businesses instead of starting a business.
